This is a story that my mother narrated often to me as a child. I loved this story so much that it has gotten etched into my heart very well and I apply it to all the situations in my life.
Once upon a time, there was a King who ruled a very big kingdom. The had a very wise minister. The king with the advice from the minister ruled his kingdom well and kept all his subjects happy. One day it so happened that the king wanted to eat apples. Since he couldn't find any servants around, he decided to cut the apple himself. The minister arrived in front of the king at the moment and in an accidental lapse of concentration, the king cut his hand. The minister while assisting the king in cleaning the wound, advised him not to worry too much and said "Everything happens for good" .
At this the king got annoyed and replied to the minister " I am hurt and suffering in pain and you are advising me "Everything happens for good" How dare you insult me like this ? "
Before the minister could reply, the king shouted, "Guards, throw the minister in prison, he will then learn not to insult me again".
Before the guards came and took him away, the minister repeated again, "Everything happens for good". And the minister was thrown in prison.
The next day the king decided to go on a hunting trip to the forest, as it seemed like a wonderful day for hunting. The king spotted a beautiful deer and went after it. After a long chase, the king could not hunt down deer and decided to return. This was when the king realized that he was very far away from the rest of the hunting party. On trying to find his way back, the king went much deeper into the forest. By now the king was very tired and dozed off under a tree.
It was dusk when the king woke up. Moments after that he realized that someone was watching him. Soon he was surrounded by tribal men. The tribal men took the king as the human sacrifice for their beloved goddess. When sacrifices are made, the tribes make sure that the creature being sacrificed does not have a flaw. Thus one of the tribes checked if there were flaws in the king. The tribe noticed the cut in the king's hand and informed the tribes that he cannot be sacrificed and the tribal men left the king and went away. The king after a long journey rejoined his hunting party.
Immediately after returning to the palace, the king ordered that the minister be released and brought to his presence. The minister appeared before the king and the king immediately apologized to the minister and narrated everything that happened in the forest. The minister listened patiently and replied " Everything that happens is always for good".
The king then asked, " Minister, you said the same thing when I threw you in prison too, How that be good for you ? "
The minister humbly replied " Oh King, If I were not in the prison, I would have accompanied you to the hunt and even though you escaped the tribal men, I would not have. Hence, Everything always happens for good. "
THE MUCH DEEPER OBSERVATION OF THIS STORY CAN BE - THE KING IS THE MIND, THE MINISTER OUR HEART, AND HOW THE MIND REFUSES TO ACCEPT THINGS AS THEY ARE AND ALSO DENIES THE HEART WHEN IT SAYS SO. THE MIND USUALLY LEARNS ITS LESSON PRETTY LATE. ANOTHER MESSAGE IS THAT THE MIND MUST ALWAYS BE DRIVEN BY THE WISE MINISTER CALLED THE HEART UNDER ALL CIRCUMSTANCES IN LIFE.
