Why is LOTUS the national flower of India?

I remember studying my national flower is lotus, national animal is tiger, national bird is peacock. Never did I really ask myself the question as to why has such and such been chosen to represent my country. I have developed a deep appreciation towards our ancestors, who are the ones who had the deepest of insight even over the tiniest things created by the Lord. The lotus is a representation of spirituality and the purpose of human life in totality. The lotus and its leaves, live in the water its entire life yet do not allow water to stick onto them. Humans must be like the lotus. The water represents the transient world in which we live. We must not attach ourselves to the pleasures offered by the transient world. Humans must focus on the ultimate goal that they must attain i.e reaching GOD. This does not mean that we must discard our worldly duties. We must perform our duties and yet be detached from the results of the duties.
LOTUS has been chosen as the national flower to promote this sense of detachment in every human being.
